STRADBROKE ISLAND
Affectionately known as “Straddie”, the island is a perfect escape from the rigours of the city. The low key and casual lifestyle, the kilometres of unspoilt white sandy beaches, and the sunny sub-tropical climate make Straddie the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Most of the island is undeveloped with Blue Lake, Brown Lake and the Keyholes, all freshwater lakes with sandy shores, accessible along unpaved tracks. Scenery varies from the shady rainforest glades surrounding the crystal clear Myora Springs to the crashing blue waves of the gorges at Pt Lookout.
AMAZING STRADBROKE ISLAND
There are three small settlements on the island. Dunwich is the gateway to the island for people arriving on the vehicular barge or water taxi and an interesting place to explore. It is home to the island’s historical museum, many historical sites, waterfront cemetery and has important associations with both Aboriginal and European history. Pt Lookout is paradise for surfers with its rolling breakers at Main and Cylinder beaches and the location of most of the island’s holiday homes and rental accommodation. Although there are many licensed clubs and restaurants on the island, the only “pub” is at Pt Lookout overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Amity Point, the third and smallest settlement has a simple laid back charm of its own.
